Long story short, I ended up on the Vagina Dentata Web site. On the Myths vs. Facts page, they had the following information posted:

Myths:
1. Vagina Dentata sufferers have the conscious desire to eat or castrate their partner during intercourse.
4. Hall and Oats [sic.] were inspired by the notorious brief outbreak of Vagina Dentata in the earlier eighties, with the song Maneater.

Facts:
2. Despite "humorous" portrayals, toothed vaginas do not have a functioning jaw, therefore cannot bite. Nor are they able to speak.

Top five coolest famous graduates from my high school

Rich.Gannon
5. Rich Gannon
Rich Gannon (class of '83) is one of a few professional athletes who graduated from the Prep, including Jets' linebacker, Victor Hobson. At the Prep, Gannon is frequently recognized as the creator of the school's fight song. His list of accomplishments is much longer than that, though. He helped the Raiders to the Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003, was named the MVP of the NFL in '02, was the Pro Bowl MVP in '00 and '01, and was also elected to the Pro Bowl from '99 - '02. He also holds numerous NFL and Raiders records, including NFL season record for 300+ yard passing games (10 in 2002).

4. Tom Burgoyne
Immediately, you may wonder, "Who is Tom Burgoyne? He's not famous." You may think to yourself that you've never seen him before and that I am already grasping at straws. Well, if you live in Philadelphia and/or watch baseball, you've probably seen Tom Burgoyne on a much more frequent basis than you realize.

You see, Tom Burgoyne (class of '83) has been the Phillie Phanatic since 1994. The 300lb Phanatic is widely recognized as one of the best -- if not the best -- mascots in sports and is also a member of the Mascot Hall of Fame.

NCAA WEST SAN DIEGO
3. Phil Martelli
You had to imagine you'd see Phil Martelli (class of '72) on this list. Martelli has been the head coach of the Saint Joseph's University basketball team for the last 13 years. He is the man who put that tiny little Jesuit university on the college basketball map. With multiple coach of the year awards (NCAA, AP, NABC, Naismith College, Chevrolet), Martelli lead the SJU Hawks to an A-10 Tourney Championship in 1997 and 4 A-10 Regular Season Championships. He's also coached eventual NBA players like Jameer Nelson, Delonte West, and Dwayne Jones towards their full professional potential. (Side note: Delonte West recently signed to play in Russia.)

2. Rob McElhenney
You may know him as Mac, the dim-witted, bar-owning, gangster-wannabe schemer from It's Always Sunny but, to some of us, he's just Rob McElhenney (class of '95), the dude who we always seemed to walk by in the hallways in between classes or see in the senior caf at lunch time. To see him go on to create and star in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia was awesome, even though I didn't particularly know him that well.

456px-Michael_Nutter
1. Michael A. Nutter
Michael Nutter (class of '75) is just fucking badass and cool as shit. Seriously, having him as the mayor of Philadelphia makes me happy and gives me so much hope for the city of Philadelphia. You rock, Mayor Nutter!

Honorable Mention: Jason Mulgrew
Arguably the first person from my high school to be considered an internet celebrity, Mulgrew (class of '97) has a blog called "Everything Is Wrong With me." The notoriety he gained from the blog lead his nomination as one of the 50 Hottest Bachelors of 2005 by People Magazine. He's working on a memoir and a possible TV show, runs a pub crawl called Drink Until You Shit, and we used to ride the South Philly bus together from time-to-time.

Gmail on your Blackberry

If you have a BBerry and you use Gmail on the phone's mail program, you may be annoyed that you get sent copies of your own sent messages to your phone. It frustrated the hell out of me for a while until I searched Google and found this thread.

Apparently, if you login to your BIS (through your service provider's Web site, you can setup a filter to prevent this from happening.

Here is a screen shot from the thread:

So much for the afterglow

After a month of rushing around, our pursuit of our ideal family home came to a crashing halt today as a result of nothing more than bad timing.

In order to make an offer on the place, the builder wanted a rather large down payment. All of our money is tied up in the equity of our home. So, we rushed to put our home on the market and search for a loan. On account of my lack of understanding of a home equity loan, I thought we didn't have enough equity in our home to get one. So, we followed some leads for potential private loans. When they didn't pan out, the mortgage person explained to me that I misunderstood home equity loans and that we would qualify for one.

On paper, we did. In reality, there was a huge problem. A bank won't give you a HEL if you have your house listed. Of course, our house went on the market the day before we discovered this. Still, a banker was working on helping us out. We were supposed to hear back from him tonight about the loan.

Meanwhile, I just received a message from my step mom saying that the other realtor needed to know what we were doing by today because our contingency plan home was under contract and a couple was coming back for the third time to see our dream home.

So, I called the banker. He said that the listing for our home showed up. He was sorry but there was nothing he could do for us.

Our house is on the market and "priced to move." We'll be paying capital gains tax. The cats will have to be displaced until we move. There's no other home we liked as much. Now what?

Chris Wheeler is an idiot

In reference to Pedro Feliz's batting performance, Chris Wheeler said, "...he has one squirter up the middle." WTF could that even possibly mean outside of the vulgar interpretation?

Also, is it just me or is Cole Hamels' pitching performance directly linked to the amount of facial hair he has? Today, he's as scruffy as I've ever seen him and he's given up a career high in hits. Drink much last night, Cole?

Serenity amid chaos

7.11.2008

This week has been insane. Everything was broken at work and I spent the last week and a half helping other people, but never handling my own responsibilities. I'd then rush home, pack furiously, and move boxes over to my dad's house. Exhausted, we'd just sleep there in Jersey, wake up extra early and head west in the mornings to start the whole process all over again. I haven't even made it to the gym since Sunday.

It's been thoroughly draining and, for the first time in months, I am actually excited about a quiet night alone tonight.

What really put me over the top was that we're trying our damnedest to come up with a lot of money in order to make the move we really want to make. So, I've spent countless hours -- at the disapproval of my boss -- on the phone trying to pull string and do everything shy of beg.

The other day, my step mom even tried to hook me up with a loan shark. She did not disclose this information up front and, to her benefit, I do not think she knew. Someone she knew, we'll call him Derrick, knew someone who was a private lender of money. When he agreed to give us a loan, he said to Derrick, "I don't need to know their names or their stories or what they need the money for. They have six months to pay me back. No ifs, ands, or buts. If they don't have it back to me, I'm holding you responsible."

The loan shark was actually really nice and was doing us a great favor, as he typically did not lend money for more than a week. He also gave us an insanely low interest rate. He was very generous in this regard.

When my step mom told me about this, she said, "Will he kill Derrick? I don't know. I don't think so... I hope not. You can't think like that, though. I don't know if he'll break his legs or what he'll do. You just have to guarantee that it won't come to that. You have to have his money back to him before the six months is up."

Simultaneously stunned, scared, and appreciative, we left it at "Thanks but no thanks."

It was an incredibly awkward moment that left my jaw hanging but it also triggered something. Suddenly, the fog burned off and I had my much needed moment of clarity.

I realized that I pushed every button that I could and pulled every string. I gave it my all and the outcome of this situation was finally out of my hands. It was up to fate. God. Chance. Whatever you want to call it.

Out of that came peace. The need for me to be aggressive was over. There was no need for me to stress. All I had to do was resign myself to the fickle winds of luck.

I'm comfortable seeing where it takes me and in knowing that Derrick's life is not in our hands.

Where you hang your head

7.04.2008

I've been busy recently with two of my busiest obsessions: real estate and hockey. I will talk about the hockey stuff in another post.

Out of boredom, I began searching through homes that were for sale by owner. I saw a place in Haddon Township that seemed nice and decently priced and decided to setup a viewing of the house. I emailed the owner and told him we'd like to come over the Sunday of that week. He asked us to get pre-qualified, basically so that he wouldn't be wasting his time with people who weren't serious about purchasing.

We got our pre-qualification letter and let the owner know. He told us that he had company and wouldn't be able to accommodate us until the middle of the next week. This annoyed me, as we rushed to do something for him but he never let us know he couldn't do what we wanted.

Out of spite, I began looking for better homes at cheaper prices in the area. I found two. They were both new construction, everything we wanted, and even cheaper than the original home. They're a mile from one downtown area we like and two from the another, less than a half mile from two different train stations, and close to the local grammar school. Best of all, it's only five or so miles from downtown Philly and close to my dad's house.

Perfect. We're obsessed with these homes and are going out on a limb to try to get one of these places -- preferentially the bigger of the two.) We met with the builder and his realtor. We've met with a realtor about putting our home on the market. He's coming back over on Monday, when we may move forward to list our place.

We're looking for our permanent family home here and the bigger of these two is the ideal option. It's relatively affordable, in the right location, is lavish, and we won't risk growing out of it. It's also a situation that we feel we need to jump on (sorry for the bad grammar.) In the past two years, only six new homes have been built in the areas we like and these are the only two that have suited our needs and are in our price range.

So, we're going to list our home. I'm very excited and I hope this works out for us. This summer, much like last summer, will probably be very chaotic. Recap: We went to Italy, sold our home and bought a new one, and Carrie got pregnant all within about a two month span.
