Resolutions: 1 month check-in

2.04.2009

  1. To say no to freelance (unless it pays incredibly well)
  2. So far, so good.
  3. To move
  4. We just finished packing Carrie's stuff, the house went back on the market yesterday, and we'll be at my dad's on Thursday.
  5. To cook a minimum of six days a week
  6. I have failed at this so far but with good reason. We decided not to grocery shop and just clear out the food we had at the house. We started ordering out when the food selection thinned out.
  7. To start my MA/MBA program
  8. No progress yet but I expected that.
  9. To get back into the habit of reading
  10. I have been reading more online content but not so much in print just yet.
  11. To learn Ruby and Java
  12. I am currently planning on starting Java/Java EE training soon
  13. To exercise at least three times per week
  14. Once we're moved into my dad's, I'll be able to follow through on this. I anticipate Angela will force me to do so. Also, I am starting Weight Watchers in a few weeks. This should help motivate me to get to the gym.
  15. To take Lily out more often and get her involved in play groups
  16. No change here yet.
  17. To start writing again
  18. I've been trying to write more but have yet to produce anything worth reading.
  19. To develop an application for a popular medium (ie. Facebook or the iPhone)
  20. I've been working on an application for wine collections. It's currently web based but I plan on converting it to another medium when it's complete.
  21. To be more patient and stop complaining as much
  22. I think I'm doing pretty well with this so far.

good idea, I think I'll check in too.

Making some progress on some items is certainly an accomplishment, especially given how hectic your day-to-day has been.

Hubs, I just started another blog for coding. You can find it here: http://blog.augustdesigns.net/

While it may not be the best resource, I put a lot of links on the side that have really helped me learn on my own over the years.

Tizag and W3 Schools have some really good basic stuff. They are good starting points. From there, I'd moe directly to the sources (the PHP and MySQL documentation.) The users provide some pretty good examples to explain the code. GotAPI is also a good catchall resource.

If you ever have any questions, I'd be happy to help you out too.

One more thing...

If you use Firefox, I highly recommend installing the following:

Firebug:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843

Web Developer:
http://chrispederick.com/work/web-developer/

HTML Validator:
http://users.skynet.be/mgueury/mozilla/download.html

Accessibility Extension:
http://firefox.cita.uiuc.edu/

They'll help out a bit.
